Porch styling

A porch that still looks composed in November.

How many pumpkins an entrance actually takes, how the sizes stack, and what else goes beside them.

A composed fall porch depends more on graded sizes than on sheer quantity. Penn Pumpkin Co builds every display from large, medium, pie, and specialty pumpkins together, plus white ghost pumpkins, minis, and gourds. Our four displays hold 22 to 52 pumpkins, depending on how wide the entrance is.

The counts

How many pumpkins an entrance takes.

Four displays, four counts. The numbers below leave out the white ghost pumpkins, minis, and gourds that come with every size, so the number of pieces on the steps is higher.

A Touch of Fall22$350
Pumpkin Pop281–2$550
Pumpkin Paradise361–2$775
Pumpkin Palooza522–3$1,250

A Touch of Fall is a smaller accent display, the low end of the range. Pumpkin Palooza suits large porches, or several locations at one address. The two in between are steps along the same line, and each one adds pumpkins.

Quantities are typical and may vary slightly with the harvest.

The ladder

Why a display is built from graded sizes.

Every display is built from five grades of pumpkin. The grading is the structural decision behind a display: the big fruit sets the shape and the small fruit fills in around it.

GradeWhere it appearsWhat it does
Grand prize pumpkinsPumpkin Palooza only, 2 of them. The tallest piece in the display, and the one an entrance is composed around.
Large pumpkinsAll four displays, from 4 up to 10.The anchors. They sit low and hold the corners of a step run or a doorway.
Medium pumpkinsAll four, from 4 up to 8.The connective mass between the anchors and the small fruit.
Pie pumpkinsAbout 10 in the first three, about 18 in the largest. The fill. Small fruit closes the gaps that leave a display looking sparse.
Specialty, white ghost, minis, and gourdsEvery display. Only the specialty pumpkins are counted out.The color and the texture, so the display is more than a row of orange spheres.

The palette is mostly settled already.

Three colors are in every package we sell. Orange from the large, medium, and pie pumpkins. White from the ghost pumpkins, which come with all four displays. The heirloom colors of the specialty varieties, green among them.

So the palette question is smaller than it looks. What changes across the range is how much of the display is specialty: 4 in A Touch of Fall and 14 in Pumpkin Palooza. Specialty climbs faster across the four displays than any other grade, and it carries the color.

Palette has its own page, including the case for stopping at three colors.

What else belongs on the porch.

Four things sit beside the pumpkins in what we sell, and the pumpkins stay whole.

  • Hay bales. None in A Touch of Fall, one or two in the middle displays, two or three in Pumpkin Palooza. They give height where a porch has no step run to build on.
  • Mums. A $125 add-on, woven through the display where you want stronger seasonal color.
  • Pumpkin stacks. Two for $100, suited to a front gate or a garage, past where the main display reaches.
  • Ten extra pie pumpkins. $75, and the cheapest way to make a display look fuller without changing its size.
  • Whole pumpkins, never carved. A whole pumpkin lasts into November; a carved one does not.

Hay bales, mums, and the add-ons go into more detail on each.

A display that holds into November.

A display that looks like autumn, and not like Halloween, carries past October 31 without looking stranded. Uncarved pumpkins are the reason that works. They are hardy outdoors in a Pennsylvania autumn, and a healthy display holds its looks for eight weeks or more.

Every booking comes with our own pumpkin freshener spray. Spray the display lightly once a week, or after a good rain. If a pumpkin spoils or rots before Thanksgiving, we replace it. Where removal is added to the booking, we collect the display around Thanksgiving and donate the pumpkins to a local animal farm.

The season calendar covers the same ground by date, from the first delivery window to the last collection.

Questions about styling a porch.

How many pumpkins does a front porch need?

Our smallest display has 22 pumpkins and our largest has 52, before the white ghosts, minis, and gourds that come with every size. An accent beside a door sits at the low end of that range, and a wide porch or a double entry sits at the high end.

What sizes of pumpkin should a display use?

All four of ours use large, medium, pie, and specialty pumpkins together, plus white ghosts, minis, and gourds. Graded sizes give a display height. One size on its own sits in a flat line.

What colors belong in a fall porch display?

Orange, white, and the heirloom colors of specialty varieties are in every package we sell. Mums are available as a $125 add-on when you want stronger seasonal color woven through.

Will a pumpkin display still look good in November?

Uncarved pumpkins are hardy outdoors in a Pennsylvania autumn, and a healthy display holds its looks for eight weeks or more. If a pumpkin we supplied spoils before Thanksgiving, we replace it.

Or have the whole entrance handled.
