The Main Line

Which towns are on the Main Line?

Ask three people and you will get three answers. Here is ours, town by town, with the drive time and porch delivery status for each.

The Main Line is the string of communities along the former Pennsylvania Railroad main line west of Philadelphia. We count 18 core rail communities, from Overbrook to Malvern, plus 5 greater Main Line towns commonly included alongside them. Together they cross 4 counties: Chester County, Delaware County, Montgomery County, and Philadelphia.

Our definition

The core: the rail communities, east to west.

These are the stops nobody argues about, in the order of the line, running west out of the city. Every drive time is measured by road from our Worcester base.

The greater Main Line: commonly included, not on the line.

These five are called Main Line often enough that leaving them out would be the odd choice. None has a station of its own.

Why the boundary is argued about at all.

The eastern end is settled. Overbrook sits on the city line, and no list starts further in. The western end is where sources part company: the rail line runs well past Malvern, while the character people mean by "Main Line" thins out somewhere around it. The towns just off the line are argued about for a different reason. Gladwyne and Newtown Square have no station between them, and both are called Main Line often enough that we count them among the greater Main Line rather than leave them out.

The argument will outlast us. What the list above does is let you see at a glance whether your address is one we treat as part of the line, and what the drive to it costs.

Main Line FAQ

Questions about the Main Line

What towns are on the Main Line?

We count 18 core rail communities, east to west: Overbrook, Merion Station, Narberth, Wynnewood, Ardmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Rosemont, Villanova, Radnor, St. Davids, Wayne, Strafford, Devon, Berwyn, Daylesford, Paoli, Malvern. Five more are commonly included without sitting on the line itself: Bala Cynwyd, Penn Valley, Gladwyne, Newtown Square, Chesterbrook.

Where does the Main Line start and end?

We start it at Overbrook, on the Philadelphia city line, and end it at Malvern. The eastern end is settled; the western end is where sources stop agreeing, because the rail line keeps going while the neighborhood character changes.

What counties does the Main Line cross?

4: Chester County, Delaware County, Montgomery County, and Philadelphia. No single county contains it, which is why we treat the Main Line as an area of its own.

Do you serve the whole Main Line?

Yes. All 23 towns on our list are 18 to 39 minutes from our Worcester base, and every one of them is bookable for both a pumpkin-patch party and a porch display.

Is the Main Line where you do most of your porch decorating?

It is the heart of it. Deep porches, stone steps, and mature planting take a curated display better than almost anything else we work on.
