Doing it yourself

Build it yourself, from our own counts.

We say exactly what is in every display we sell. Take that list to the pumpkin stand and it works just as well there.

To build a pumpkin display yourself, buy graded sizes in the proportions a full display uses. The four displays Penn Pumpkin Co sells hold 22 to 52 pumpkins, across large, medium, pie, and specialty grades with white ghost pumpkins, minis, and gourds alongside.

The list

Our four displays as a shopping list.

Each column is one of our displays, item by item, at the count we deliver it. The column closest to the size of your entrance is the one to shop from.

Quantities are typical and may vary slightly with the harvest. The white ghosts, minis, and gourds sit outside the totals, so every display holds more pieces than the last row shows.

The proportions to copy.

The counts climb at different rates across the four. Specialty pumpkins more than triple between our smallest display and our largest. Pie pumpkins hold at about 10 through the first three and only move at the top of the range.

So a bigger display is a different mix, and copying the mix matters as much as hitting the number. What to buy, and in what proportion works the four displays out as percentages you can apply to any budget.

Three ways to get the pumpkins.

Building it yourself does not have to mean sourcing it yourself. You can pick the pumpkins, or let us pick them and bring them to you.

  • Source it all yourself. Four size grades plus specialty and white varieties, which rarely sit at one stand. Finding all of them takes longer than arranging them.
  • A DIY delivery. On A Touch of Fall and Pumpkin Pop we pick the pumpkins and deliver them, you arrange them, and the price drops by $75.
  • Shipped to you. If you want our pumpkins and are arranging the display yourself, we can ship them. Get in touch and we will work out what you need.

Buying the pumpkins from us goes through both, including which displays the DIY delivery is offered on.

What it costs, and who decides that.

One half of the sum is ours to answer. The DIY delivery takes $75 off the two smaller displays, and that is what our design and installation come to.

The other half is what pumpkins cost near you, and only a local stand can tell you that. DIY versus hiring a decorator puts our counts down one side and your local prices down the other, so you can add it up for your own porch.

Making it last past Halloween.

A whole pumpkin is hardy outdoors in a Pennsylvania autumn, and a healthy display holds its looks for eight weeks or more. Cool weather helps. Direct afternoon sun and standing water shorten it.

Keeping a display going covers the rest, including the pumpkin freshener that comes with every booking and what our replacement guarantee covers.

Questions about doing it yourself.

How do you build a professional-looking pumpkin display?

Buy four graded sizes together, in the proportions a full display uses. Our four displays run from 22 to 52 pumpkins across large, medium, pie, and specialty grades, with white ghost pumpkins, minis, and gourds alongside them.

How many pumpkins do I need to buy?

Our smallest display has 22 and our largest has 52. How many you need depends on how wide the entrance is. Both numbers leave out the white ghosts, minis, and gourds that come with every display we sell.

Can I buy the pumpkins from you and arrange them myself?

Yes. On A Touch of Fall and Pumpkin Pop a DIY delivery takes $75 off the price: we pick the pumpkins and deliver them, and you arrange them. We can also ship pumpkins to you if you would rather arrange the display yourself.

Is it cheaper to decorate a porch yourself?

That depends on what pumpkins cost near you. We can answer the other half of it: a DIY delivery takes $75 off the two smaller packages, which is what our design and installation come to.

Or buy the pumpkins and skip the sourcing.

A DIY delivery brings the pumpkins we picked to your door, and you take it from there.
